Being a psychiatrist in private practice, I am most intrigued by the mental aspects of
Aikido. It seemes to be about balance and harmony, integration of mind and body, and focused
relaxation. It's beautiful, graceful and powerful. But don't look at me; I'm the newest
student, I started only two months ago. I'm forever stumbling over my own feet or crashing into
the floor fan. Even then, I'm kindly reminded to be patient -- that's another thing I'm
learning. And although I am often fustrated with myself, it is strangely refreshing.

I looked at several Aikido schools before I settled here. I chose this one because of
Sogi-Sensei. Besides his unparalleled technique and finesse that wows us, his wise, humble,
compassionate ways have a trickle-down effect on all of us, hopefully down to me, too.

I am deeply grateful that I have been warmly welcomed by my fellow Aikido students and
instructors despite my serious deficiency in coordination. (My girls worry that their mom
will be kicked out any day now, and advise me to quit with dignity before the embarrassing
predicament occurs.) Perhaps someday, I will be able to acquire an ounce of grace and harmony.
Until then, I plan to just have fun.
